You may have heard people use the comment ... that where you are right now is perfect because there is learning and growth in the present.

You realise that for your business to become successful it needs to change and evolve.

They really do sound like contrary beliefs.

What can you do with that information if you are building a business and need to become better at marketing and communicating the value you deliver?

I have met with a number of clients this week who are focusing on getting things perfect, before they begin putting their value in the public eye. What I'm observing is that for each of them it will never be perfect. One has been busy "getting it right" for 6 months and it still isn't there.

The perfect sales letter, brochure web site, advertisement was never presented to the public the first time. This concept is a bit like the "overnight success" that took 10 years to happen.

All this is an ever evolving and changing process, not a one off event.

If you can't possibly know everything ...

  • how do you know what you are doing is sufficient to meet your end goals?
  • when is "near enough good enough" not sub standard?

These are great questions that need to be answered.

Here's a template you can use to move forward on any area of marketing and communicating the value of your business.

Each step is simple and requires thoughtful time.

Since these steps must be repeated weekly, keep a written record to create a path and see progress over time.

Action steps

  1. Know what you want and be able to define it.
  2. Cultivate the idea of what you want. Expand on it. Let it grow, change and increase. Keeping the idea fresh is a must. The opposite is boredom- another escape trick
  3. Know where you are currently.
  4. Accept that you can proceed only from where you are. You cannot skip steps to get where you want to be. Wanting to skip ahead is a delaying tactic.
  5. Be OK with not knowing everything that you think you need to know. That is simply a delaying tactic too.
  6. Explore possible "next steps". Do what you can do as a next step. Only accept the ideas that feel right, not the ideas that appear to be "the current thing".
  7. Take the next steps, even though you cannot be sure of the outcome.
  8. Increase expectations. Expect more and better.
  9. Revisit step one on a regular basis. Is that what you still want? Why?
  10. Write out your intent. Keep a keen awareness of why you want what you want. You reasons for wanting what you want are a significant portion of the mental energy required to create. Do not neglect that.

These are all things you can do yourself

There is nothing you cannot do from the above list.

Do not worry about all the hundreds of other details that will fall into line on your behalf. All else will be taken care of one way or another for you.

Reminder

Know that the details will take care of themselves; this requires that you see yourself as a part of the process, and that you play an important causative role. You are not the only person in the process just one side.
