| The S word |

May be you are thinking of the wrong “S” word, or may be you need to think of two “S” words? Many business owners are facing an emptiness that comes from simply making a living. Success = making a living. That’s the first “S” word. We are so focused on our success that what we end up doing is just making a living. The real work we really need to be working at is making a life. Significance = making a life. That’s the second “S” word. Making something of significance means doing work you are called to do, rather than doing that which you feel you have to or work that merely pays well. It means following your natural abilities or vocation, rather than performing a job. The work of making a life (significance) as an antidote to the emptiness that comes with simply making a living (success) Making a living (success) is becoming a challenging issue for many people I’m working with a couple of clients who have spent a large part of their life seeking Success and have, at their own admission, ended up on the treadmill. Throughout their life they have not listened to their inner self and when they finally do this, realise that Significance has sated their underlying un comfortableness. Both these people have made major changes to their lives so much so that many of their friends and relatives are talking of a “mid life crisis”. One response was … “midlife crisis …. my whole life has been a crisis until now” Are you seeking success or seeking significance? |
