The Cinderella Syndrome Print E-mail

Why do people have a need for drama in their lives?

People have been hearing fantastic stories since ... as long as stories have been told.

The problem is, many are now thinking that life is supposed to be like the stories.

Cinderella

Let's look at this very common story.

alt

It starts with her awful life with evil stepsisters, scrubbing the fireplace.
Then she get an invitation to the ball!
Things look up.
Then the fairy godmother makes her a dress and a coach.
Even better!
Then she goes to the ball, and dances with the prince!
This is great!
But then it's midnight. She has to go.
Oh no. Sadness.
Back to her humdrum life scrubbing the fireplace.
But it's not as bad as before, because she's had this encouraging experience.
Then, the prince finds her, and the happiness factor is off the chart!
Happily ever after.

People just love this story and it's been written thousands of times in thousands of ways. And because of it, many naive people think their lives are supposed to be like this.

Common Disaster Story

alt

It's an ordinary day in an ordinary town.
But something horrible happens!
A child falls down an old mine shaft!
The whole town gathers to save her.
Old grudges surface, but are belittled in the light of this tragedy.
Rifts are bonded as people work together.
The child is saved, and all is well.
But notice it's a little better than it was before, now that this incident has brought them all closer together.

People just love this story and it's been written thousands of times in thousands of ways. And because of it, many naive people think their lives are supposed to be like this.

There is a problem

The problem is, life is really like this...

alt

Our lives drifts along with normal things happening.
Some ups, some downs, but nothing to go down in history about.
Nothing so fantastic or terrible that it'll be told for a thousand years.

But because we grew up surrounded by big dramatic stories from books and TV soaps and movies, we think our lives are supposed to be filled with huge ups and downs!

What has this to do with business owners and their education?

alt

It starts with things in Bill's business proceeding as per normal.
Nothing eventful is happening and business is may be not as good as Bill would like it to be.
Then Bill sees and advertisement to attend a workshop that offers a solution to a problem that he reckons is the cause for his business problem.
Things are looking up.
Even better!
He discovers a well known identity is going to be presenting and so registers and attends the workshop.
This is great!
Bill leaves on a real high with all sorts of ideas that the presenter delivered that had Bill seeing a great future for the business.

The Real Story

alt

Months later and Bill's back to his humdrum life, nothing has changed.
Except Bill is more frustrated than he was before.
Day to day business has got in the way of Bill implementing the ideas he was given.

The rationale behind the regular meetings is that this ongoing connection, the phonecalls, web forum and emails, provides support between the face to face meetings. It also serves to allow group collaboration and while some may have low energy others others with high energy provide a sense of balance and stability.

Overcoming the Cinderella Syndrome is the core approach behind directedfocus and why ongoing support is most important. If this makes sense to you or you would like to explore options then please contact me
